Hi, Maybe someone could help Pete G a vrccuk member who has recently moved to Marciac north of the Pyrenees to live, he seems to be having trouble getting insurance, his message is below....

Hi All, I am having trouble registering the bike in France and Axa the insurance company most of my french insurances are with will only insure it for 1 month and in that time it must be reregistered in France, so at the moment not insured at all.Does anybody know of an english insurance company that will give an extended green card or does anybody have a French VRCC member contact who could point me at a french specialist insurance company. The reason for coming to France was to get away from all the hassle but this is giving me some aggro! Thanks as always for any input

Actually, first, by law you have to register your vehicle in the country you're living in. Second, an insurance cover a vehicle registered in the country of the insurance, and allow this vehicle to move abroad but only for a certain time limitation (in my case, moving from FR to IT, i was covered for 3 months. Then, i had to first register it in italy and then to take an italian insurance. That what i was supposed to do ). So finally the answer of axa is normal: the bike has to get a french number first, then obtaining the insurance should not be a problem.
Anyway, hope that Mary found a solution

I completely agree with you. This is due to the right sided handelbar on the UK bikes which has to be moved to the left side.

oh damned .....

To be serious, Nico answered exactly. In France, due to the 100HP limitation crazy rule, it's not easy to register a bike.

He has two choices:

- register the bike in france (100hp limitation and so on) -> that's what he's supposed to do if he wants to follow the rules and have no problem. Yes Fifi it will take time.

- having an english insurance covering his bike registered in UK. In that case, he has to declare himself having an address in UK. It works, except if, first, policemen doesn't control him frequently, and second, if he has no accident. That's in that sad case that problems could rise... the trick doesn't work if you have a serious injury, and that's a dangerous game: the insurance could simply say that the conditions of the contract are not legal, blablabla...

Alain, Petes Valk is a French Canadian model so I expect the bars are the right (or wrong) side depending what side of the pond you are

Not heard of the 100 HP rule before, I guess its a load of regulations to stop big bikes on the road...not good

Thanks again for all your help, maybe Pete should sell his one and buy a French Valkyrie, sounds easier

Fifi> it is... for example, a french insurance can not cover a french car which is for a long stay abroad, neither a car registered in another country: everything has to be in france for a long stay. Moreover, for sure there are always some possibilities to make the trick (I think about Boss Hoss motorbikes and canadian residency), but avoid any accident... else you'll see how insurances can let you alone.
